Ahead of the CPL 2020 Draft the Barbados Tridents have released the list of domestic players that they have retained for the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League.

The Tridents have retained a large part of their championship winning core, bringing back eight of their core team with the addition of new signing Nyeem Young, who was signed from the Emerging Player pool. Skipper Jason Holder has been retained and returning to try and retain their crown will be spinners Ashley Nurse and Hayden Walsh Jr. All-rounders Raymon Reifer and Justin Greaves also return along with batsman Jonathan Carter.

The Tridents' two wicket-keeper batsmen, Shai Hope and Johnson Charles, are also part of the returning group.

Hope played just 3 games last season due to injury, but with his prolific form for the West Indies since his return, he will be looking to take that to the CPL. Charles on the other hand was the Tridents' leading run-scorer and third-highest overall in last year's tournament with 415 runs averaging 31.92 for the season. The Tridents' best partnership featured Charles' 110 run effort with opening partner Jonathan Carter, who was the team's third-leading run-scorer. Carter also had perhaps the defining knock in the final, his 50 off just 27 balls proving decisive in taking the Tridents to a very good total.

Leg spinner Walsh Jr. was one of the revelations of last season picking up 22 wickets to finish as the top wicket-taker of CPL 2019. Not only did he finish top of the wickets chart, but he did it at a miserly average of 12.68. He also had the best bowling figures of any bowler in the tournament with his 5/19 against TKR at Bridgetown. No other bowler managed five wickets in an innings in CPL 2019.

All-rounder Reifer came good as the tournament progressed, finishing with 14 wickets and was the joint-second highest wicket-taker for the Tridents alongside captain Jason Holder. His best figures last season of 4/24 came in the final against the previously undefeated Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Speaking about the Caribbean player retentions, Tridents captain Jason Holder said: “We are really excited to build on last year's championship win and it is great that we have been able to retain the core of our squad for this season. Combined with the international players that we are planning to add to the squad we are looking forward to defending our championship.”

The CPL is scheduled to take place between 19 August and 26 September, but the tournament organisers are currently watching the current situation with COVID-19 closely and are liaising with medical advisors and governments. A decision on whether the tournament can proceed as planned, or at a different time, will be made as soon as possible.
