DUMINY, LAMICHHANE SHINE AS TRIDENTS GET SEASON’S FIRST WIN

Barbados Tridents registered their first win of the 2019 CPL after they defeated St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 18 runs.  JP Duminy’s 43 off just 18 balls and spinner Sandeep Lamichhane’s man-of-the match performance of 3/22 helped the Tridents clinch their sixth win here at Warner Park.

Put into bat by the Patriots, Johnson Charles and Leniko Boucher put together an 85-run second-wicket partnership, after English opener Alex Hales was dismissed early. Charles scored four boundaries and three sixes on his way to his tenth 50+ score in CPL and his first for Barbados Tridents. The difference between the two teams though was Duminy’s final flurry off 43 off 18 balls which helped Tridents push to 186/2.This was their fifth highest score in CPL and their highest in Warner Park.

Jason Holder put St Kitts & Nevis Patriots under pressure picking up two wickets in his first two overs, including that of Evin Lewis, who starred in the Patriots’ 242 chase in their previous game. English international Laurie Evans was able to keep the momentum going, especially attacking the spinners Hayden Walsh and Sandeep Lamichhane.

Despite conceding 14 in his first two overs, Lamichhane came back to dismiss both Brooks and Evans in his third over. Both batsmen were beaten by drift and spin, Evans especially attempted a big slog but could not read the top spin.

Once Evans was dismissed, the pairing of the two leg spinners, Walsh and Lamichhane, started to look unplayable, they picked up one wicket each in their next overs. Fabian Allen and Carlos Brathwaite completely played down the wrong line to googlies, leaving the Patriots at 107/7, with 80 runs still to get.

If not for the rain in the 15th over, the Tridents looked like they would run through the Patriots. After a 45-minute delay, Dominic Drakes gave the Tridents a late scare scoring three sixes off Jason Holder’s 18th over. Despite scoring 26 runs of that over, the Patriots still required 40 off the last two, finally finishing 18 runs short of the Trident’s total.

Barbados Tridents - 186/2 (J Charles 52 (43), L Boucher 62 (47), Duminy 43 (18)) v St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 168/9 (S Lamichhane 3/22, J Holder 2/37, H Walsh 2/33). Tridents won by 18 runs
